TransGender Education Association

Welcome

Welcome to the TGEA Web Site, Whether you are curious about the transgender world, or are comfortably living in the gender that suits you, we hope you will find this web site to be a useful resource.

TGEA is the largest of several gender based support groups in the Washington, DC area. Our membership flexes, but remains within 60-80 at any time. We trace our roots back thirty years to Delta Chi, one of the earliest "open" groups to support all who define themselves as transgendered. Our membership is culturally, racially and gender diverse. We make no judgments on sexual orientation or life goals.

TGEA sponsors a monthly meeting on the 1st Saturday of the month. We do not openly advertise the meeting location in consideration of those members who wish to explore their gender in privacy. You need not be a member of TGEA to attend a meeting, thought you will have to accept our standards of behavior before being invited to attend. We also sponsor a Holiday Dinner in December that is open to all transgendered individuals, their partners, and support groups in the area. In addition, we have several opportunities to attend events that are outside of regular meetings as well as conduct outreach to local organizations who wish to understand the issues associated with being transgendered.

We guide TGEA according to the following values:

TGEA exists to provide an accepting environment for transgendered people and their partners in which to explore and develop their full personalities. We will endeavor to reach those closeted transgendered people in the metropolitan and surrounding areas with a positive message and offer them an alternative to living in a closet.

We will fulfill this mission through:

    1. Respecting the privacy of our members. We will insure the confidentiality of member identity and other membership information.

    2. Insuring that new members and guests of TGEA are welcomed and offered the assistance of a sponsor to help them as they explore their gender expressions.

    3. Enhancing member self image and confidence by providing education programs, and opportunities to expand social interaction through fostering of non-meeting activities.

    4. Conducting an effective outreach to local organizations that have an interest in, and interact with, the TG community.

    5. Providing a reliable source of current information and referral to all inquiries

    6. Promoting and supporting the efforts of the other TG group in the area.

Joining us:

Many of us who are transgendered have been forced to keep this part of our personalities hidden. This usually manifests in feelings of extreme isolation. By joining a group like TGEA, you realize that you are not alone at all. In fact you will be surprised at the number and variety of people who consider themselves transgendered. If your partner is transgendered, you too will find others like yourself who are sharing the challenges of maintaining a relationship through shifting gender roles.

If you are in need of support as you explore your gender identity, or if you need help in understanding a friend or loved one who is transgendered, I hope you will consider joining TGEA. The first step is to contact the membership director through this web site or by mail. She will be able to answer any questions you have and provide directions to our meeting locations.

We look forward to meeting you soon!
