Welcome to The TGEA Library

This is a list of the materials contained in the TGEA library. These resources are a good starting point for anyone who wants to explore more on the topics of Gender, Transgender, and Transsexuals. Those items with an * in front of the title are new to the TGEA Library.

Any member of TGEA may borrow materials by filling out a checkout sheet. A selection of the library materials is available at the regular meetings.

We hope to build the library holdings into an educational resource for all the members! If you have books (or DVDs) you no longer want, please consider donating them to the TGEA library. It helps us build the library holdings, lets us share materials with more people, and keeps expenses lower (and gets some clutter out of your home) - a win-win situation for everyone!

Miss VeraÕs book discusses her life, how the academy came to be, and what she and her cliental learn about being TG/CD. She covers topics of passing, makeup, how to walk in high heels, etiquette for budding princesses, sex education, and, of course, getting frocked. More importantly, she discussed how her largely heterosexual male clientele develop their inner femme and to "take the insights of their femmeself and integrate into their male persona." As Miss Vera states in her book, ÒTo be a lady, you have to start by being a gentleman.Ó She explains that manners are a refinement of ones self whether you are male or female, and in the society of woman not knowing or following the rules will set the stage for whether you easily pass or get read the second you appear.

While written for the theater, the author provides the TG community an insight to the basics makeup whether for the stage or a night out. The author explains the basic techniques of makeup, offers tips on putting together a personal makeup kit, provides tips on analyzing one's own facial features, creating a picture file, caring for one's skin, and using a color-mixing chart. These are the basics whether for the stage or a night out.

  78. *Survival of the Prettiest, by Nancy Etcoff. NonFiction, Self Help. Beauty is not a myth, for Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. According to Harvard Medical School psychologist Nancy Etcoff, the pursuit of beauty is neither a cultural construction, an invention of Madison Avenue, nor a backlash against feminism. The concept of beauty has evolved far beyond its original intent as an admonition against false vanity to become a cultural manifesto used to explain phenomena as diverse as the art of Andy Warhol and the rise of a multi-billion-dollar cosmetics industry. Nancy Etcoff argues persuasively that looking good has survival value, and that sensitivity to beauty is a biological adaptation governed by brain circuits shaped by natural selection.

Published 1996, Rainbow Books. "Rachael Miller" is a heterosexual, married man with a high-paying job in a prestigious company. He is a transvestite. He hid that fact due to shame and fear or rejection. In desperation, Rachel began a quest for relief that led to the discovery of the truth about himself and other transvestites.
  81. *The Danish Girl, by David Ebershoff. Fiction. While the main character is a transsexual, the book is less concerned with transgender issues than the nature of love. Loosely based on the life of Danish painter Einar Wegener who, in 1931, became the first man to undergo a sex-change operation, The Danish Girl borrows the bare bones of his story as a jumping-off point for an exploration of how Wegener's decisions affected the people around him.

  94. Tips, by Nancy Cole , Fiction, From the back cover - College is a time of discovery, when students find out just what sort of people they are. This is especially true for Andy Newly, a freshman who has always been fascinated by all things female. The opportunity to delve into the allure of the feminine world come while working as a waiter in an upscale restaurant. It begins with a bet made among his fellow student co-workers designed to determine who makes more tips, male or female waiters. Though feigning reluctance, Andy accepts the challenge of becoming the test subject. With the help of his friends, Andy is prepared to take on the role of female waitress. In the course of these activities, he finds himself not only enjoying the experience but embracing it, a fact no lost to his more astute friends. Quickly they conclude that there is something more going on than a simple social experiment as Andy, who uses the name Amanda when assuming a female persona, uses the opportunity he has been given to experience the world as a female. In the process, he comes to question not only his gender identity but his sexuality as well. The story follows Andy as he faces ever-increasing challenges and situations as he deals with his sexual identity. This is complicated when a male college student becomes smitten with Amanda.

Julia Serano, a transsexual woman, shares her experiences pre- and post-transition, revealing at every turn the ways in which fear, contempt, and dismissiveness toward femininity shape our societal attitudes toward trans women, as well as gender and sexuality as a whole. Whipping Girl is a collection of personal essays that debunk many of the myths and misconceptions that people have about trans women, as well as the subject of gender in general.
  105. Who's Really From Venus, The Tale of Two Genders, by Peggy J. Rudd. Non-Fiction. Finally the answer to the Question: Can the balance of masculinity and femininity improve humanity? There are millions of people on Planet Earth who choose to embrace the better qualities of Venus and Mars rather than stay with the stereotypical model or expected norms of their birth sex. Their stories are presented within the pages of this thought provoking book.

  107. Woman I Was Not Born To Be, The A Transsexual Journey, by Aleshia Brevard. Autobiography. MTF. This is the story of the transformation of Alfred Brevard ("Buddy") Crenshaw to Aleshia Brevard, female entertainer in Hollywood. This memoir is a rare pre-Women's Movement account of coming to terms with gender identity. Brevard writes frankly about the degree to which she organized her life around pleasing men, and how absurd it all seems to her now. Under the stage name Lee Shaw, Brevard worked as a drag queen at Finocchio's, a San Francisco club, doing Marilyn Monroe impersonations. Later, she worked as a stripper in Reno and as a Playboy Bunny at the Sunset Strip hutch. Her break into cinema after playing opposite Don Knotts in the movie The Love God, Brevard appeared in other films and broke into TV as a regular on the Red Skelton Show. She created the role of Tex on the daytime soap opera One Life To Live. As a woman, Brevard returned to teach theater at East Tennessee State.
